When I first became involved with astrology, a number of things intrigued and even startled me about this discipline. One of those was the fact that it even was accurate at all and said things about my life the astrologers I spoke to couldn’t possibly have known.
Modern human beings have lost intimate contact with the seasons, but agricultural or peasant peoples were much more aware of them. However, seasons are still so important that they define the basic cycle of astrological signs. The name "seasons" refers to the stages and stations of the Sun in the sky, just like the stations in a train trip.
What path do you have to follow in order to develop your sense of individuality and a healthy ego? The Sun in astrology points to the father archetype, the animus, the ego and the hero. As a symbol of the hero, it represents what you must fight in a conscious way to obtain its maximum expression, either bright or dark, in the sign it occupies. The experience of the Sun is an important constructive factor for personal satisfaction, self-determination and will; it represents the conscious ego.
The Twelve Letter Alphabet, sometimes called the twelve "Archetypes," underlies much of the presentation of planets, signs, and houses in modern Western astrology. In my view, this has led to the distortion of much of astrology's fundamental symbolism. Many other astrologers have come to the same conclusion, yet this system persists.
The zodiacal mechanism is composed in principle of twelve pieces that contain various peculiarities, not only because of their own nature (have you ever thought that they are eleven members of a fantastic animal kingdom and a measuring instrument called Libra), but also because of their natural placement.
A picture is worth a thousand words, they say. So when I was asked to distill some of my ideas for a magazine issue devoted to the Leo/Aquarius axis, I immediately thought back to one image in particular that, to my mind, best captured the essence of this zodiacal dynamic: Two or three children on a playground, laughing and singing in blissful abandon, while circled around them are a dozen scientists in white lab coats, carefully observing and recording every move for a research study on the nature of play.
Every few years we hear the same old news from critics of astrology, mostly astronomers and physicists who know nothing about astrology.
The relationship between astrology and food is not a new concept: it is based on the ancient belief that all things in the universe are connected. Hundreds of years ago, alchemists – the scientists of their day – respected the divine connection between the planets and signs and nature and created tables of correlations to which astrologers still refer. Even today you can find Culpeper’s Herbal on the bookshelves of books stores, which provides the planetary rulers for various herbs, fruits and plants.
I had been flirting with the idea of writing an astrological cookery book for some years when I came across a little book entitled, 'Kafka's Soup'. The author, Mark Crick, had given fourteen famous writers – Jane Austen and Homer among them - the task of writing a dinner recipe. And there it was: my epiphany. I would take the twelve signs of the zodiac and allow them to put together a three-course meal in their own unique style.
I wrote 'Astrology in the Workplace' with the intention of appealing both to the astrologer and the general reader. Indeed, if I have a mission in life, it is to make astrology accessible to everyone without compromising its integrity. Most of us have jobs, and most of us must therefore interact with people who share our working space. So, the benefit of knowing how we all tick, what to watch out for and how to make the best of our working relationships cannot be underestimated. In the bargain, you get to see how the elements flow through life as vibrantly today as they did in the time of Empedocles.
In the zodiac, the second stop on the path of learning is Virgo. Learning is different from Gemini in this process. Virgo takes over the direct self-expression, the revealed raw creativity from the previous sign, Leo, to polish and bring them to perfection. After Leo, this process is one of ore raw material processing, the process of making oneself ready to function within a larger whole and be of use to it.
