Biography

American actress who received the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in the comedy-drama film Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966). She was awarded two Best Actress Tony awards, for A Thousand Clowns (1963) and Any Wednesday (1964). Other films include Up the Down Staircase and The Out-of-Towners.

Dennis had a relationship with jazzman Gerry Mulligan from 1965 to 1974; one miscarriage. In 1967 she rented a seven-bedroom house in Connecticut where she lived with her mother, three dogs and 37 cats. Eric Roberts, almost 20 years younger, was her companion for five years.

According to Roberts, Dennis told him she had many lesbian relationships and that she "appreciated the beauty of women. But she also liked and appreciated what a very, very young man could do to a woman, I suppose."

She had surgery and chemotherapy for cancer in 1989, and died of ovarian cancer at age 54 on 2 March 1992 in Westport, Connecticut.
