Biography
American politician, considered by colleagues to be the most powerful and arrogant member of the U.S. House of Representatives. He was first elected on 19 February 1964, followed by large vote re-elections. With a strong voice, he was known as an obnoxious bully, though highly competent in his job.
Burton's younger brother, John, was also a politician, a U.S. Congressman and a far-out liberal. Phil Burton earned his law degree in 1952. He married young and had one daughter.
Burton died of an embolism on 10 April 1983, 1:44 AM, San Francisco, CA.
