Biography
American popular university student who died after a hit-and-run car crash in 2008 at age 18. Her family, together with the University of Kentucky (UK), later established the Connie Blount Memorial Fund scholarship, benefitting Equestrian majors. On 28 April 2008, Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear signed a law ("Connie's Law") that makes it a felony to leave the scene of an accident.
Connie Blount was a student at UK, Lexington, and an avid horse rider and skier. She was knocked down in the street by a vehicle around 2:30 AM on 13 April 2008, then taken to UK Hospital where she died about two hours later.
The driver, Shannon Houser, was arrested following the death of Blount on 13 April 2008. He appeared in court on 2 February 2009 in the Fayette Circuit Courthouse in Lexington, Kentucky. Houser began to plead guilty, but then changed his mind and plead not guilty to the charges of leaving the scene of an accident, tampering with evidence, and possession of marijuana. On 5 February 2009, after three full days testimony, the jury found Shannon Houser guilty on the charges of tampering with evidence and leaving the scene.
On 20 March 2009, Houser was sentenced to 5 years in prison, the maximum penalty. In Fall 2011, he was released from prison. Houser had appealed his conviction and it was upheld.
In 2018, Connie's father Jack B. Blount published the book Connie’s Message—Smile!: Hope for the 21st Century.
